Discussion/Quiz for Mon/Tues

Read the section on "Solute Concentration in Aqueous Solutions" on pages 51-52 of your textbook. You should understand the concepts of
• what a "mole" is
• how to calculate moles if given the molecular mass of a compound.
• what molarity is and how to calculate that from an amount of solute.
It would be most helpful to look at sample questions that ask you about these three concepts. Specifically, you can examine question #4 in the Concept Check 3.2 on page 52 and question #8 at the end of the chapter (pg 57). I'm sure there are many more on the Mastering Biology website for your textbook.

Superbowl weekend
Feb/03/2012 Filed in: Weekly updates

The notes for the week have been uploaded.
This past week we had a visitor for the biology club come to class. If you didn't receive one of the fliers, you can visit their site at http://csnbiologyclub.com/
One of the activities that some members of the club participate in (but anyone is invited to attend) is the biology journal club. Participating in this activity is a fantastic way to make yourself familiar with how science really works, and would undoubtedly help you with the research paper assignment for lab.
Enjoy the Superbowl.
One week down

The first week is over, only 15 more to go.
The notes for the first week have been uploaded in the notes section. If for some reason you've forgotten the username and password, write me.
Chapter 22 had very little actual study material compared with the chapters we will be covering starting next week, therefore the notes are very brief this week.
Let me remind you again to acquire an iClicker2 (original iClickers will work) before class next week. We will be registering them on Monday/Tuesday. In future weeks there will be small assignments here to prepare you for possible iClicker questions the following week.
In class this week we talked about the natural selective pressures on elephants. It looks like elephants just received more predator selective pressure to survive.
Classes begin January 23rd

Biology 196 began a transformation last Fall. Importantly, Biology 196 no longer requires a Biology 189 prerequisite. BIOL 196 is now considered the introductory freshman biology course for science majors at CSN and UNLV. The 189 course is only required for students in allied health programs.
The science section of the Cheyenne campus has also undergone a transformation, and my sections of 196 are taught in brand new lecture halls and labs!
At this website you will find lecture notes, links to grades, syllabi, schedules, etc. Please check the frequently asked questions page (especially if you are trying to get into this class) and make sure you have the appropriate software.
Required materials:
• Textbook: Campbell, Biology with MasteringBiology® (ninth edition), copyright 2010 ISBN-13: 9780321558145.
If you have an older version you could use that, however you won’t have access to any of the online material the publisher provides. Also, its worth noting here that the same textbook is used for the Biology 197 course at CSN. We arranged that specifically to try and save money for the students.
• An iClicker 2. We will be using this for quizzes in the lecture, and you must have it to receive the points. The iClicker can be purchased in the campus bookstore.
